There are two separate sub-categories so you need to be clear which one you need to apply for. They different based on whether you are remaining within the UK airport, or leaving the UK Airport. They are:
If you are changing your flights at the same airport (e.g., your arriving flight is at London Heathrow and your second departing flight is also from London Heathrow), and, therefore, you will not be going through UK Border control, then you need Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) and it remains valid for up to 24 hours.
If you have to go outside the Airport (e.g., your arriving flight is at London Heathrow and your second departing flight is from London Gatwick), you need a Visitor in Transit visa if you’ll go through the Border control but leaving the UK within 48 hours for your main destination.
